"Open Here" Bottle Opener

Gilding the lily is, in our opinion, a crime against simple, effective, beautiful design. And so it is with the remarkable and enduring 'Open Here' Bottle Opener, which has survived unchanged since its invention in 1925. In fact, so classic is its design, and so effective is its functionality, that it has remained in constant production for over 80 years. There's no need to change it, or improve on it, or tweak it, or re-brand it.

For there's simplicity in its operation and robustness in its manufacture. Once affixed to the wall with a pair of sturdy screws, simply insert the head of the bottle into the mouth of the device, then press in and down, removing the top in a trice.

Pop it in the kitchen or fix it to the wall near the barbecue and it'll never go missing - handy for social gatherings when there's a certain inevitability to the departure of the only bottle opener in the house.

Start by looking at the opener, then touch it, then pick it up and you'll be feeling the work of genius - with a solidity redolent of an old Volvo, or a pack of Meccano from one's childhood. Made from heavy duty cast iron (most likely using an antique cast), with instructions painted in an uncompromising shade of red, this design is as iconic and all-American as any Coke bottle or Greyhound bus.

They say 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it.' And for once, they're right.
