Back in the olden days, before The Clever Mr Jobs invented the iPod digital music device and thrilled us all with his regular team talks at Macintosh-based conventions the world over, there was the Boombox.

The Boombox, for the uninitiated, was a mighty music playing device that, despite being the size of a small county, one could carry around with one. Back in the 1980s, they were, despite their physical unattractiveness, weight, power consumption and low fidelity, the very height of fashion.

Now the past has the habit of being reinvented and coming back with a vengeance to bite one on the derriere. And none more so than in the case of this wickedly funny recreation from the good sorts at Cardboard Classics. It differs from the original Brixton Briefcase in two key considerations:

1. 1. It is made of cardboard and
2. 2. It contains a docking station for an iPod

Put these modest differences aside and you could be off, bass-bins a-tremblin to whatever Rastaman vibrations are comin' up from da streets of your, err, hood.

But back to matters practical. Being flat-packed cardboard, it's ever-so-easy to assemble. And, coming with real in-built speakers, an internal amp and all the wizardry necessary for digital docking, it does actually, when all is said and done, work.

So go forth, dig-out and dust-down that old Caribbean compilation album, and get well dubbed up in a cardboard stylee.
