Meteo Weather Watch
Gadget No. 0448
The glory days of Thursday night television, in the three-channel universe, were halcyon indeed. The lurid spandex spectacular of Top of the Pops was invariably followed by the somewhat less spandexy, and infinitely more educational Tomorrow's World. As time progressed and it became clearer that we weren't all going to be living in space bubbles and eating fuel pills, there was much fun to be had watching live tv experimentation at its flailing, fumbling finest.
However, not even Tomorrow's World, with its rotating lamp post painters and bizarre wind tunnel experiments could have foreseen this gargantuan leap forward for all things chronological. For although the late-lamented TW dabbled briefly with grainy watch-borne TV from those clever little Japanese, it could never, ever have foreseen The Wristwatch That Can Forecast The Weather.
New from those scientific Americans at Oregon Scientific comes a weather station that one wears on one's wrist - a watch-sized Michael Fish that is not only highly proficient at telling the time. Oh no. But is also rather clued-up when it comes to predicting precipitation.
The trick, apparently, is in the measurement of barometric pressure trends, which this sleek little watch performs continually, giving one an icon-driven forecast for the period 12-24 hours ahead. All of which is displayed on an ever-so-trendy white-on-black LCD display. And is, to be frank, rather nifty.
If that's not enough to satisfy one's desire for feature-rich functionality, it's also water resistant to a depth of 30 metres. Quite the little clever-clogs.
